Bioscientifica exists to support biomedicine. Through our expertise in publishing, events and association management we strengthen biomedical communities to advance science and health.
Bioscientifica collaborates with leading biomedical societies to publish and develop journals that have high impact, a wide reach and a healthy financial return.
Do you have an idea for a new event to serve the needs of your research or clinical community? Bioscientifica can work with you to develop a meeting as part of our BioHorizons series.
We have over 25 years of experience providing specialist Association Management services, enabling biomedical societies to thrive.
Bioscientifica supports open access to research articles through both 'gold' and 'green' routes. We publish both fully open-access publications and subscription journals which offer open-access options ('hybrid' journals). Both types of journal maintain extremely high standards of peer review, production and publication.
WHAT IS OPEN ACCESS?
An open-access article can be freely accessed online by anyone in the world. With recent developments, the term is often used to mean free access with additional usage rights.
Does open access affect me?
In short, yes! Authors may be mandated to publish in an open-access journal by national policies, funders or their institutions. Authors may also choose to publish open access in order to attract more readers or to retain the copyright to their article.
Readers will be able to access published work free of charge. Anyone can copy, share and make use of work published under a CC-BY licence, e.g. in teaching. Different types of CC-BY licence specify whether work may be used commercially and if derivatives can be made.
OPEN ACCESS MODELS
What are Green and Gold?
Be aware of funder requirements. Check the embargo period in the journal’s instructions for authors. Is this compatible with your funder’s policy? If not, you may have to take the gold route to comply with the funding body.
Information on journal policies can be found on the SHERPA/RoMEO database.
OPEN ACCESS MANDATES
Bioscientifica supports authors by enabling compliance with all funder mandates or preferences for 'gold' or 'green' open access. Please check whether your funder has any requirements for depositing articles in repositories or for the licence terms which articles are published under. Links to funders' policies are listed in Bioscientifica’s open access policy, and you may also wish to consult the SHERPA/JULIET website.
Beware! Policies are changing all the time
Paying Author Publishing Charges
Some funding bodies award block grants to institutions to cover Article Publication Charges
Administration of funds can vary and is the responsibility of the universities; some sit with the library and many now have a dedicated support team for open access
Bioscientifica’s open-access journals offer discounts to members of owning and endorsing societies
We also offer half-price open-access fees to authors whose institutions subscribe to our hybrid journals
Bioscientifica operates a discount and waiver programme for authors in countries, areas and territories with low-income economies (as defined by Research4Life).
For more detailed information, please see Bioscientifica’s open access policy.
