Welcome

We extend a warm welcome to participants at BioScientifica’s forthcoming symposium on statins. The symposium will be of particular interest to anyone wishing to understand better the impact of this class of cholesterol-lowering drugs on atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.

Speakers from a number of countries and disciplines will discuss the pharmacology, clinical efficacy and mechanisms of action of these drugs, and their considerable potential for reducing coronary heart disease in high risk groups such as diabetics, as well as in the population at large. These issues will be aired in the light of both clinical imperatives and economic constraints. Current U.S., European and British policies on cholesterol lowering will be reviewed.

This symposium will provide an up to date account of a topical subject of vital interest to endocrinologists, cardiologists and other allied disciplines, including public health medicine which affects national health policies. We hope delegates will leave the symposium with a better understanding of these revolutionary drugs, which have been described as "the penicillin of coronary heart disease".

The symposium will be held at the Royal Institute of British Architects, 66 Portland Place, London, W1B 1AD.

The Head Office of the Royal Institute of British Architects was designed by George Grey Wornum CBE FRIBA (1888 - 1957) and was the winning entry of a competition open to all British Architects to design a new Head Office. The RIBA was completed in November 1934 and opened by King George V and Queen Mary on 8 November.

Today the RIBA not only serves as an efficient headquarters, but also provides a fantastic venue for conferences, meetings and banquets. The unique surroundings will add prestige and orginality to the event. Located on Portland Place in the heart of London the RIBA is extremely convenient for all major stations and transport links.

The symposium will be held in the Jarvis Suite.
