Steve Byford

Steve Byford has well over twenty years’ experience in scientific publishing. His previous employers include IOP Publishing, the publishing arm of the Institute of Physics, where he worked for many years in a variety of roles, including journal production, peer review and development, together with the specification of a major new editorial database.

In the early years of his work for BioScientifica and the Society for Endocrinology, he led the launch of online versions of previously print-only journals, and their subsequent development for well over a decade. He has also specified and managed the implementation of innovative new products such as Endocrine Abstracts, a free online resource capturing conference abstracts. In his current role of Publications Director, he has overall responsibility for the Group’s publishing programme, and has extensive experience of advising learned societies on publishing issues, such as increasing online visibility and multi-site licensing. He has a particular interest in strategic considerations for the future of scholarly communication. He has made representations concerning Open Access to major organizations on behalf of learned societies and is currently a member of the Universities UK Working Group on the accessibility of Open Access funding, the Steering Committee of the ALPSP Learned Journal Collection and the Journals Committee of the Biosciences Federation.
