Joanne graduated with an honours degree in French Studies and Linguistics from Lancaster University in 1997. She went on to teach business English in Paris and then completed a Masters degree in French Cultural Studies at the University of Surrey. Following that, she gained membership experience at the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) in London, working as Membership Manager. In 2006, she moved to Bristol and worked in the events team of the accountancy firm Grant Thornton until the opportunity arose to manage the Secretariats team of Bioscientifica in 2008.
